The New and Improved Flex.org!

We recently updated Flex.org - check it out!

Facts about Flex.org:

Flex.org is managed by the Adobe Platform Evangelism Team so it's a bit less formal than the typical Adobe sites.

It is a great first stop for anyone interesting in seeing what Flex is about. It has very good introductory content about all things Flex related. In other words, it "evangelizes" Flex. ;-) If you want to introduce a coworker or friend to Flex, send them to the site.

The new site has links to tutorials, technical articles and mobile specific articles - this type of content did not exist in the previous versions of Flex.org. I think you will find that the content changes much more frequently than the previous site.

Many of the articles are simply syndicated from our various blogs, Adobe Developer Connection, Adobe TV, the Flex Team blog and any other content that we feel is relevant and useful.

The entire site has an RSS feed at http://flex.org/feed so go subscribe! The individual sections have RSS feeds as well - just add "/feed" to the URL.

The Flex showcase is still the same as before and has lots of great reference sites. We will be adding mobile showcase items soon. Be sure you follow http://twitter.com/flexshowcase. We are always looking for new submissions to the Flex.org showcase.

We've added a Barcode Generator sample from Nathan Daniel, which demonstrates generating different types of barcodes that you can use in your RIA. This sample includes support for code specifications of Code 39, Code 93, Code 128 Type B & C (limited) and now Interleaved 2 of 5!

Tour de Flex Samples now hosted in 16 locations across planet earth!

A few weeks ago, Tour de Flex passed the 20 million samples served milestone very quietly. The quietness was not intentional.... we were just too busy to notice when it happend! Traffic continues to be very strong and very spread out across the globe. Starting a few minutes ago, all of the Tour de Flex samples are now hosted in 16 different locations around the world (see map below). When you view a sample, it will load from the location that is closest to you. If you are in China or Japan, you'll really see a difference in load times.

I'll be blogging in the next couple of days on how this was accomplished in less than two hours....so stay tuned. It's actually very cool! You will find the post at http://gregsramblings.com.

For those of you that haven't looked at Tour de Flex lately, you should take a fresh look. We now have 551 Flex samples! A lot of the credit goes to Maile Valentine who has taken over responsibilities for getting more samples deployed to Tour de Flex. Our response time has gone from 8+ weeks (I suck) to less than 2 days (Maile rocks)! SO IF YOU HAVE SAMPLES TO CONTRIBUTE, SEND THEM TO ME at gregsramblings (at) gmail (dot) com. After a quick review, Maile will get them added.

Adobe AIR Launchpad is a new desktop tool that helps Adobe Flex developers get started building desktop applications deployed on Adobe AIR. Simply run Adobe AIR Launchpad and select the capabilities you need; Adobe AIR Launchpad will create a ready-to-import Flex project with your selected features implemented in a way that can be easily modified and extended. You can use the resulting project as a starting point for your AIR application.

New Flex Box Samples

Today, we have added 7 new Flex Box examples to Tour de Flex. These samples include awesome Animated Drag Tile applications by Ely Greenfield, which demonstrate a Picasa-like drag/drop animated Flex Tile behavior, a fun alphabet game and team manager roster.

The Blink Component Sample, by Ted Patrick, shows how to extend the TextField class to support blinking text and an interval property that determines its speed.

Ely Greenfield and Brendan Meutzner show how robust charting can be in Flex with their Chart Drilldown Animations and Chart Offset Calculator samples.

Six More Google Map Samples

Today we have added 6 more Google Map samples to highlight a variety of functionality.

Included in these samples are 4 from Pamela Fox that demonstrate Geocoding functionality (Geocoding Form and Geocoding Nudger), Toggling Marker Categories and a Store Locator that allows you to search stores within a user-defined radius of a specific address and displays the results in a DataGrid component.

We also included a Marker Tracker sample by Michael Menzel that uses the open source MarkerTracker library to track a marker that has gone out of the map viewport.

Nianwei Liu has created another 3D Map sample to show how to use the ArcGIS services with the 3D class.

Check out the 3 new Google Map Samples in Tour de Flex.

The Circle Creator, by Shigeru Nakagaki, lets the user create circles with various parameters (radius, color, etc.) on the map.

Andrew Trice created an XML Data Visualization sample that shows how to parse an XML file containing temperature data for U.S. cities and then create markers based on the data. Check out what else makes this a cool sample!

We also added a Zoom Slider sample by Pamela Fox that shows how to use an HSlider above the map to let a user control the zoom level of a map.

Three New Google Maps Samples Added

There are 3 new Google Maps samples in Tour de Flex. Included are Streetview + map sample by Andrew Trice which shows a great way to embed an existing Flash component into their Flash/Flex application.

The Tile Detector, created by Pamela Fox and Nigel Tao, shows how to display information such as tile and pixel coordinates about the clicked tiles.

There is a 3D Map Driving Directions (photo tour) sample by Michael Jones that demos an animated car along a driving directions route using Map 3D and popups of infowindows with Panoramio photos along the way.

We just posted Tour de Flex 2.0. If you already have a previous version of Tour de Flex, it should auto-update to 2.0. This latest version has several bug fixes and now requires AIR 2.0 to support many new AIR 2.0 samples. Go grab it and check out the new samples in the AIR Applications folder! There is some great stuff!

We just added samples from Flexicious to the "Other Components" section of Tour de Flex. If your application requires a datagrid, this is a must-see.

The Flexicious Flex DataGrid/Advanced DataGrid controls are extensions of the mx.controls.DataGrid and mx.controls.AdvancedDataGrid, with UI to provide filter, paging, sorting, Select All Checkbox, and footer operations. It provides support for SERVER and CLIENT based data manipulation. With client data manipulation, all operations (filter,page,sort) are performed by the grid internally, without a SINGLE line of code. For server manipulation, the grid fires an event with all the necessary information to fetch data from the server. It also supports Flex DataGrid Print, Excel Export and a host of other features!

The Flexicious Flex DataGrid/Advanced DataGrid controls were designed with Line of Business applications in mind, so most features you would expect for enterprise application development are built into it. Compatible with any flex framework (Mate/PureMvc/Cairngorm) as well as any backend techonology! Integration examples with popular backends, including Java/Spring/Hibernate as well as .NET/Entity Framework/IIS/SQL Server are included!
